The Gladiator Class

I've been lax in blogging, but I've been working on stuff over here.  This new campaign world I'm working on is going well there are a lot of parts to it.  I'm sure I am over doing some things (like the classes), but I'm enjoying the process.  Last time I posted the Guard class and everyone was very helpful.  I need to update it to the newest version.

This time I'm posting the Gladiator class.  Some of the...who am I kidding, I watched a ton of Spartacus and that's where my inspiration comes from.  Arenas are fairly common in my world.  That or the simplified version of pit fighting.  And this time around I will be using the one silver earned equals one experience point.  Never did that before, but for the gladiator and earning money in fight becomes more of an experience pool than just thumping opponents.

Once I get a few more done I'll add a page to above for my campaign material reference.  I've been working on dungeons, towns, NPCs, mapping, class building and trying to untangle how I want to use the magic system in different ways.

  1. Some initial thoughts: For a very focused fighter-type, he seems underpowered. I think the to hit bonuses should start at +1 for 1st level, like a normal fighter; I think the 2nd attack shod come sooner (like 5th), since he only goes to 9th; Personally, I would give him 1d10 for HP, but a d8 is good. Just some ideas. :)

    1. Great suggestions Tom. I like them. I always worry I am overpower a class, cause I do that, so I might have reeled it in too much for this one.

  2. I watched an interesting Documentary on Gladiators. They were the "Star Athletes" of their day -- hero worship, girls, the works -- and a great many of them were not slaves.

    So they took their training seriously. I'd agree with Tom, above.

    1. Yeah, that's what I am going for. There will be slaves, but they are put to task as servants and doing the horrible labor jobs. Gladiator is too high profile and profitable.

  3. Stupid work block such things, but I look forward to taking a look when I get home. Wikipedia says some interesting things about gladiator careers and lifespans: "few survived more than 10 matches or lived beyond 30."

    1. Absolutely and that is something I plan on keeping, the absolutely deadliness of the games. While there is magical healing available, if you get your head lopped off you'll need glue and a resurrection. In my world, gods aren't going to be to bothered it someone takes a dirt nap. And if they do get raised, one or more of the five gods of death will send minions to collect a toll that must be paid.

  4. Nice class write-up, Tim. I agree with Tom's idea of bumping up the second attack to an earlier level. Two questions:

    Are you basing the standard to hit bonuses on S&W? If so, I'd say the +0 at first level is fine, as you have it. If, on the other hand, you're modeling it off another rule set where a standard first-level fighter gets +1, I'd say the gladiator should have that too, as Tom suggests.

    Also, can the gladiator select "shield" as his armor specialization, or must it be some form of "body" armor?

    1. Hmm good point. Change to +1 at 1st level and the shield...I don't see why not. They'll be four size shields, buckler, small, medium and grande..err tower.
