For a while I was in a Monday Night GURPS game and a Wednesday night Weird Adventures game. That was pushing it for me. I loved playing both games. We tried to make a hard deadline for quitting time, but once you get jazzed up from the game that time seems to slide on you. So the late nights were tough. Early mornings, difficult work makes for a very tired worker.
Currently I'm just with the Monday GURPS group. Ken is purposing a Blood & Treasure RPG dungeon crawl type campaign. He would like to do it once a month. I'd love that. And I'm always interested in getting in on a casual weekend game, but would prefer to play on an actually table top. With real dice. Real miniatures. I miss that.
A week? I'd be happy if I could do two a month. As it is scheduling conflicts keep me down to about 10 times a year. So I'm looking at Roll20 now.
ReplyDeleteI have a weekly group that I have been playing with for about a decade (and the group existed long before that). I also have several groups that meet once/twice a month. So it's possible that I have two or three game nights a week. Three can be a bit much, especially when I'm the GM at two of those nights. But I enjoy it nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteI've been in the twice-a-month mold for a few years now - and that's assuming I can herd all the cats together just for that.
ReplyDeleteIf I could find a group/get a group going, I could do 1x a month. 2x if I don't have to travel to do it.
ReplyDeleteI do get a weekly solo rpg fix but I usually play in much shorter bursts than a typical group game
What Rod Thompson said. Back in the day, one good session on Tuesday was cool. Eventually, I also added a Saturday afternoon game. And then the Tuesday game went away, and I was left with the Saturday game. Now, 2 Fridays a month, if we're lucky.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't think I could do it on Work nights anymore.
There's no way my group could do work night games. None. We can't keep a hard "finish time" deadline to save our lives (sometimes that's not so far fetched, considering our wives' reactions to the 2:00 a.m. returns). We start at 4:00 and try to end by 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. Emphasis on the word "try."
ReplyDeleteOn top of that, I'd love to do a weekly game. It's hard enough, though, for the six of us to find one single night a month in common. So, we wind up--like Rod--at between 10-12 sessions a month.
If I had my 'druthers, I'd have two games a week. Any more, and it would eat into other things I do, any less and I would be sad.
ReplyDeleteI currently have no games a week, and so I am sad. I am, however, working on it. I'll be running one game a week before too much longer (I hope). I think that I will actually have it every other week, so that I can have a different game in between, while also leaving room for a second game each week that I can play in.
I like the idea of a weeknight weekly session (like our Monday night GURPS sessions) and then maybe once or twice a month on the weekends. That is a max for me, with family, work, music, etc.

ReplyDeleteIf I was PLAYING in a game, not running it, I'd like to think I could do at least three a week. But I'd definitely risking RPG-fatigue/burn-out. And it'd probably crimp my other "game-related" activities (like blogging and writing).
That's not NECESSARILY a bad thing, but I do feel I have what it takes to make a "contribution" and "give back" to the community...though maybe that's just arrogance talking.
I currently play twice a week. That's probably all I could handle, since family obligations pile up (mainly that the game-start through game-end times usually overlap toddler bedtime.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, I play in three games. GURPS Dungeon Fantasy:Jade Regent weekly, a GURPS Space game every other week, and Pathfinder Skull and Shackles on opposing weeks (same GM for those last two).
