My question today is what is your favorite 'trap' monster?
I'd have to say the mimic is my favorite because it can cover a lot sneaking disguises and catch the adventures off guard.
"I check for traps," say Mr. Thief.
DM nods. "You find a trap. The chest eats your arm."
Other party members cheer.
Yes I too love mimics, just used the "door" mimic in my last session. I also have a Klockwerke Hornet often used in my campaigns by them sneaky dwarves. The lock mechanism "transforms" (Deception style) into a mechanical hornet with an acid stinger.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever used a mimic in my campaign but I'd want it to be something like the scene in Carpenter's 'The Thing" where they give the guy CPR and his chest open up into a giant bloody mouth and bites the guys arms off. That's how I'd like to describe to my players, maybe show them that clip from the film.
ReplyDeleteI did this thing a while back... xD http://eyerayofthebeholder.blogspot.ca/2013/10/brunos-cruel-d-ideas-deadly-outhouse.html

Ha ha ha!!! Seems like the thing that should...oops, I mean could happen to Luven.
Probably the lurker above, just because they seem pretty cool. I use a lot of slimes, too, but that's a trap posing as a monster. Mimics are fun, but "I carefully eyeball the chest up close" is a distant second behind "I stand at reach and hit it with my weapon to chop it open!" Mimics would do better posing as a pile of treasure, no one checks piles of coins for traps in my experience. "We gather the coins." Ooops.
ReplyDeleteMimics have always been a favorite. Soooo many uses for them.
ReplyDeleteNo love for the lurker above? Hmmm. :)
ReplyDeleteMimics are good clean fun. Saw one posing as a trapdoor down which was hilarious. Less so to the gung-ho scout of course.
Personal favourite was the executioner's hood because it was so unlikely you'd ever find someone willing to try it on unless you put one in a bucket of course...
