Things I Also Thought About Gaming While Not at the Table

James C. over at A Dungeon Master's Tale wrote a cool blog about Ten Things I Did as the Dungeon Master This Week all them away from the table and without cracking a rulebook.  He's got a great blog please go check it out.

I don't know if I have ten things, but I do a quick list.

1. I was in the small bathroom at my house trying to get out Christmas decorations and a thought popped into my head.  It would be hard to fight in this small of room.  Especially with wepaons.  No way to swing a sword or axe.  Even the angles of the hallway would make it difficult to use a polearm.  Maybe it popped into my head because I was loosing a fight with the decorations.

2. Food.  If I was lugging, fighting and healing I would want to eat and drink a lot.  How much water would an adventurer really need for some of these adventures.

3. Since its snowing now and I nearly went ass over tincup on my sidewalk I thought if I had weight on my back armor on, no good grip shoes I would be falling all over the place.

Everyone have a great weekend.  Remember to take a break and do some gaming.

  2. Thanks Christian, but it looks like you spoil your guys with all that fantastic food. Can't do that over fantasy grounds.

  3. In NERO live action roleplaying people quickly shed any excess gear and just went with the minimum essentials.

Compact food like beef jerky helps but it sucked when you ran out of water. You got thirsty quick.

Confined spaces indeed suck and just about all you can do is stab. It sucks to be an axe guy with is why swords and the occasional one handed spear are the most popular weapons at NERO.

Note that because of the no physical contact rule at NERO trying to force a doorway is particularly onerous. For safety you could only tough another person with a foam weapon or beanbag packet during combat.

If you had to do it for real you would throw up a shield and just charge in body slamming anything in the way. Even then it wouldn't be pleasant.

Snow and ice is indeed a pain in the ass even with properly fitted armor and well distributed gear. Leaf littered forest ground is also a lot of fun (not!).

On the other hand it wasn't hard to keep warm with full armor on. Properly layered it worked great. Although it did take a while to warm up any metal armor but once it was warm you were good to go.

If you were wearing a chain coif or a half helm you need to wear a liner underneath that drapes around sides and back of the neck.

Also needed to continue to wear the sweat band that used during summer once you started fighting you quickly heated up. Although cooling down was way easier. Just step into the shade.

  6. Hello, new follower by way of your wife's blog, which was by way of a comment left on my blog.

I'm glad I found your blog. I played D&D in high school and had so much fun with it I decided to write my NaNoWriMo novel about it. As I go through and edit, I might have a few questions for you. Hee,hee. Back then I was playing with adventure books dated back to the 70's. That's no good. The internet was helpful though and I learned a lot along the way.

    Great blog!
