Why I Am Not Buying the 1E Reprints

I think the covers look great.  I think the idea of the reprints is great.  I hope new gamers grab a copy and check them out.  It reminds me a little of when I was a young lad and loved Hard Rock, but then found the Blues.  A source of what I loved.

But, I already bought the books.  I like the ones I have.  I'm not sure, but I thought I saw they were going to be $35 each.  That's $105 for books I got.  That's $105 I could spend on OSR stuff, zines, adventures, and supplements.

I would rather buy more OSR stuff.

  1. That's money that won't go to the Gygax Statue fund.

    Just sayin'.

  2. what % of the cover price is going to the fund?

  3. Just read that is where the funds are going. Very cool. But, still doesn't change my mind.

  4. Yeah I'm a gamer on a budget.. i figured I donated to the fund the first time around when I bought them in 1980.

  5. I'm torn about buying the reprints as well... I still have my originals and that is quite a bit for books I already own.

  6. Yep, I've already got AD&D, and the books are still in fine condition. Now, if they were to reprint the OD&D whitebox set, that would be a different story.

  7. I am so conicted. I want to support the cause but that much money for something I won't likely use is hard to justify.

  8. A 100% of the cost going to the statue? I have no idea, but I doub it (totally uneducated guess). I bet less than a third is going to the statue fund. So if you aree wanting to support the effort, but not the books, donate a third of that total cost to them directly.

I originally thought I would buy them as well, nostalgia and all that, but now, when I think about, I will be passing as well.

  9. Considering 1e books are all 20 years old or older, I think some well-made new copies would be great.

  10. I'm picking em up.
for a variety of reasons/circumstances I own duplicate copies already, in various states of decay. the brown early prints I got in middle school have held up great. The orange spine ones I picked up later, not so much.
New copies are welcome, and I could always use a spare (PH anyway) for use at the table.

Plus I'm kind of a pack rat, that's the kind of thing I do.

Also, I want to encourage more of this type of thing - if sales are good maybe they'll reprint more of the older stuff. I've got a fairly good collection but I'd love to see more reprints of classic stuff, like say, the giants series (not updated or anything, still 1E, but a hardback compilation wouldn't hurt my feelings.)

  11. I have no idea what percentage of the sale price goes toward the fund, and honestly I really don't care. I tip my hat to WotC for donating even a small portion (I hope it's substantial), but if my goal was simply to donate to the fund, I would do it directly instead of through a third party.

As others have said, I already have a set of books and they serve me well. I don't need another set. Nonetheless, I will certainly buy these when they come out.

I have bitched about WotC not re-releasing older content for years. It would be hypocritical not to buy the books when WotC finally makes them available. But more than that, I want to show Wizards that there is a strong market for this older material in the hopes that they will expand the effort and release additional products. Hopefully, this first step will do well and we will see the LBBs and all the modules shortly thereafter.

  12. I just think for a reprint they could come in at a lower price point.

  13. Memorial funding aside. 100 bucks goes A LONG way in the DIY OSR community. Both invigorating new and creative products and keeping the dear old system alive.

  14. I can see so many reasons why people would want to buy the reprints. And I am sure they will do a fantastic job.

But, I can't go along with the reason that it will show Wizards there is support for it. I think the strength of what the OSR has done over the past few years and Dragonfoot alone shows its out there.

Another but, I say I am not buying them now. I have been known to change my mind and it wouldn't surprise me if I do. I just hope they continue to reissue some of the old stuff.

  15. I'm in at least for the DMG. Mostly because I only started buying all the books with 2e and I never picked up a copy.

  16. Slowly, sanity returns...thank god...

  17. I just posed about this on my blog today, too. Similarly, I've already got the PHB and DMG. I could use a Monster Manual, but for me there's the hassle of trying to get one while I'm stuck here in Korea.

I really hope they do well, both to support the Gygax statue and to encourage more old school reprints in the future. I just won't be one of the people buying one this time.

  18. I'm passing as well. I don't need a new copy of stuff I already (and only keep for inspiration, reference, and nostalgia anyway).

Plus I'm not sure I care that Gary Gygax has a statue or not.

It's nice that they'll be out there but neither the statue or my interest in old games makes it a moral imperative that I buy everything they reprint. I'll buy reprints when they reprint stuff I don't have now.

  19. When I first heard the announcement, I was all in for a set. Seemed like such a nice way to help out with the GG Memorial and a way for me to cast my "vote" with WOTC. The other day, my FLGS owner let me know that he would be getting copies and asked if I wanted to put a hold on a set. At that point, I was a bit more on the fence. I do own copies of the originals and they are in fine shape (and I got the entire set for about $20 at used books stores -- I played BECMI "back in the day" and never picked up the AD&D stuff). I'm still on that fence, really.

I'm sure some of you will remember Zak S's Xmas list? Where he asked WOTC to release of coffee table style book of old TSR adventures with modern conversions, notes, gaming stories, etc in the margins. Now that would be a must buy. This, I'm still not sure...

In the end, I think I'd rather give my cash to the OSR publishers. Maybe that is the more important vote in the long run. I know you guys are making stuff for me, not just extending some sort of olive branch.

  20. The DMG reprint is going to be $45, so $115 for all three.

Anyway, my PH is worn out (and my little brother had scribbled on the pages, anyway) and I need to replace it. I could just get one from the used book aftermarket, but this way I'll have a new one, help show WotC the level of support for older editions (which will hopefully get them to make a reprint of the White Box and the four supplements, too, which is what I really want), and support the statue fund on top of it all. Being kinda OCD about my books, I'll want the other ones that go with it, too, for graphic design completeness.

  21. Oh, and as for the idea that they're too expensive: if you check an inflation calculator, you'll find that the prices are only slightly higher than the originals (they'd be about $30 for the PH/MM and about $37 for the DMG, given the original 1979 prices of $10 and $12). Given that a portion is going to the statue fund, that seems reasonable to me.

  22. I dunno.. seemed easier to come up with that 12 bucks in the 80s than it does the 30 bucks in 2012 :) And I have a job now..
