Print Sales Roundup

The cantankerous and inquisitive +Jason Zavoda asked how many sales were print.  So I took off my shoes and began counting.  Here are the results.  These are total sales for the items I sell in print versions.  All of which I make and assemble from my office.  I have a few other print offerings like the Mini Manor and Where is Margesh Blackblood?, but those are freebies I give away.

Knowledge Illuminates: 27 print sales.
My first release, over three ago, keeps getting a handful of sales in PDF.  However, the print version never caught on.  I really like the look of it with Dylan Hartwell's artwork.  He did a fantastic job that sets the mood for the adventure.  I've got a follow up adventure brewing.  Something to do with a certain chest.

Manor #1: 105 print sales.
This one did very well.  There was a lot of excitement when it was released and I remember getting on my blog roll and saw 3 or 4 reviews for it at the same time.  I was very nervous when I released it.  It was great to see the reception it got and gave me the confidence to continue.

Manor #2: 91print sales.
I was able to follow-up with the second issue fairly quickly, I think only 2 months separated the issues.  I really like this issue.  Hugo is a fun guy to role-play.  He's actually based on a PC from years ago.  I've used him several times in games.  The party always comes away either angry or amused.
Manor #3: 72 print sales.
It took a long time to get issue #3 out.  I think it was 7 months between issues.  And upon release there was less interest compared to the first two.  I think by this time there were a handful more zines out there.  While it struggled in the beginning, it continues to get sales, especially in the bundle buys.

Manor #4: 69 sales.
This one was a lot of work.  Especially for +Jason Sholtis who made the mini monster section exceptional with his art.  The adventure I wrote for this issue I never got to playtest.  I rewrote it four times.  Overall I like how it turned out, but still want to know how it plays out on the table.
Manor #5: 51 sales.
My latest offering.  Each zine has sold a little less than the previous one, but they all continue to trickle in sales.  The print sales seem to all come in the beginning.  Then the PDFs continue to sell.  Maybe its because I only sell my print issue from my home.  Not sure.  I'm curious as to what a compilation of Manors will do in print.

Total Print Sales: 415
This doesn't include the 10-12 comp copies each issue.

I have no idea how these sales stack up against the other great zines out there.  Or OSR products in general.  But I'm pretty content with them.  It's allowed me to pay for art, get a few gaming items and gives me the push to continue making more adventures.  I would be creating these adventures either way, but there is something very cool about selling them, sharing it with others and hearing feedback from it.  I enjoy sharing what I do with others.  Including the sales numbers.  So Jason, you wanted the print sales figures.  You got'em.

Knowledge Illuminates Pay What You Want Update

I put Knowledge Illuminates on the Pay What You Want on RPGNow and now that its been over a couple of weeks I thought I would update how its been going.  I know some are interested.

Total Sales: 51
Free: 38
.01:     1
.10:     1
.78:     1
$1:      5
$1.50: 1
$1.90: 1
$2:      2
$10:    1

Nearly 75% of sales were free downloads.  Of the thirteen paid sales I made $23.29 (not going to figure in the RPGNow cut).  I averaged .46/sale.

This is a skewed result because KI has been out for a while and most who wanted it already got it.  While the results aren't spectacular they are interesting.  I appreciated who plunked some coins into the tin cup.  All the sales I made went to ConTessa fundit.  I'll keep KI on PWYW, but not sure if I would do it again.  I do like having the option though.

I'd be interested to see how others fared.

Pay What You Want for Knowledge Illuminates

Last night I added Knowledge Illuminates to the Pay What You Want list of of OSR items.  After the responses to yesterday's Friday's Question and reading what others, more proactive than myself, have said.  After a little consideration and kick ass pizza and an episode of Ghost Adventures (I really do like the show, they crack me up) I decided to go for it.

I'm a fan of options.  For a buyer this is one of the biggest options you can have.  As I mentioned in the previous post, as a buyer I'm not all that fond of picking a price.  Never have been.  I know others have said get it for free then plop in the money.  It may take some effort, but I'll get there.  The interesting thing is that of all the OSR products on the list of PWYW, I already bought all, but two of them.

Random Thoughts (some are obvious)
  • Of course this won't work for print versions.  No way could I do this for print versions.  I'd end up paying others to read my stuff.  Had to do that for college.  Didn't like it all that much the first time around.  But I think this is a no brainer.
  •  I think a suggested price would be helpful.  Although I haven't seen how I can do this.  When Knowledge Illuminates comes up in a listing of products its old price is there, but when you click on the product page it just has the PWYW box.  It would be great to have an area just to put a suggested price.
  • For GM Games I don't see doing this for new products.  I will probably wait a few months before offering it PWYW.  But, there are ideas that I would develop just for PWYW.
  • It makes bookkeeping a nightmare.  lol
  • RPGNow for some reason did not put the PWYW option in the price section.  I had to get on Google+ and but Tenkar where to find it.  You'll need to go into Update Product Files.  This is where you usually select that its a PDF file.  If you want PWYW you'll need to select it in the drop down menu.
  • I read someone mention they hope that free stuff doesn't go to PWYW.  I know I won't be doing that.  I'll continue to put out weird freebie stuff once in a while.
I thought about doing a perceived  value story here, but I won't.  It bored me when I wrote it.  Short version, Ivy and I ran a business for over five years and there is a lot to be said about perceived value of something.  Lowering the price does not necessarily make it sell better.  Not at all.

Here's a little glimpse of what has gone on since I placed Knowledge Illuminates in the PWYW category.  It hasn't been 24 hours yet, but with the speedy Erik Tenkar he already reported the change.  I've translated all the money into US dollars.

I've sold a total of 17 copies since late last night.
12 got a free copy.
1 person paid .78 cents
1 person paid $1
1 person paid $1.90
1 person paid $2
1 person paid $10

This seems about average from what I've heard from others.  The other thing to consider is KI has been out for a while and most of the people who were going to get a copy has got it.  Nearly 33% of the customers threw some change into the tin cup.  One generous person laid down a tenner.

As a publisher it comes down to what you want out of your product.  Is this a viable option for you and your product?  I'm going to see how it goes.   I just checked and 3 people have KI in the shopping cart and 34 have it in their wishlist.  This has been a fairly steady pair of numbers.  With this option will it persuade them to choose KI?  I don't know, but its kinda cool to see how it will work.

GM Games End of March Sales

Here's another addition of "A Peek Behind the Veil of GM Games" or "This is where I tell you how much I sold this month".  This month was fairly calm.  Sales were steady in one venue while they tailed off in all the others.  There were no new releases or reviews that I can think of this month.  I've been spending my time split between working on the 4th Manor and getting my ass handed to me on Black Ops 2.

Here's how the total sales look this month.
20 - Manor #3
8   - Manor #2
11 - Manor #1
18 - Knowledge Illuminates

Here's how the sales broke down.
  • I sold 5 print copies of #3 Manor and Knowledge Illuminates to Noble Knight Games.
  • Personal print sales, 1 of Manor #1, 2 of Manor #2 and 3 of Manor #3.
  • Lulu, 1 sale of Manor #3 and 2 sales of Knowledge Illuminates.
  • RPGNow, 11 sales of Manor #3, 6 of Manor #2, 10 of Manor #1 and 11 of Knowledge Illuminates.
So despite not having a new release and reviews I still sold 57 units.  Which I will take any day.

On tap for next month I plan on releasing issue #4 of The Manor.  It will be larger, better quality paper, more art and with all this a bit more expensive.  Right now it's looking like it will be $5 for US, $6 for Canada and $7 for the rest of the world.  The mini-monster manual looks great.  I'm formatting them to have a cohesive look.  And I'm finishing the adventure.  It's coming along slower than I want, but so far I like it.

Enjoy April 1st, I know I will be bombarded at work with 'Your shoe is untied' and the classic 'You got something on your shirt'.  I'm excited to get that kind of jovial spirit started.  If I was a woo hooer I would woo hoo right now...but I'm not.

GM Games Sales Report

It's hitting the end of the month and I try to post my sales for GM Games when I have any to report.  Why do I do it?  I believe I do it because I like when companies let me peek behind the curtain.  To have concrete numbers that go with sales and gaming.  When I started, I had no clue how many I would sell.  I still don't.  But my guessing is a lot better.

In February I released the third issue of The Manor and participated in Jim Raggi's Free RPG Day Kickstarter.  The Kickstarter alone gave me more sales in PDFs than I had previously combined.  I sell all my print items from my home.  But I'm planning on doing a combo, issues #1-4 in a book form, but due to the new policy of RPGNow's printer they will not ship books to my PO box.  I'll figure something out.  The PDFs I have for sale are on RPGNow and Lulu.  I've inquired about selling them on FRP Games, but haven't heard back.

Here are the numbers for February.  I've broken them down to show where the sales come from.

Manor #3
43 - Print Sales
 0  - Lulu PDF
 9  - RPGNow PDF

Manor #2
 4  - Print Sales
 0  - Lulu PDF
 2  - PRGNow PDF
70 - LotFP Kickstarter PDF

Manor #1
 4 - Print Sales
 0 - Lulu PDF
 3 - RPGNow PDF
92 - LotFP Kickstarter PDF

Knowledge Illuminates
1  - Print Sale
2  - Lulu PDF
3  - RPGNow PDF
73 - LotFP Kickstarter PDF

The Kickstarter made a decent month into a stellar month.  I plan on storing the money from the Kickstarter to get art for the zine and other projects.  Also this month I had some people who ordered back issues.  It's very cool coming home after a long ass day of work and see a few sales in my e-mail.  But what I am seeing is a spiraling downward trend with PDF sales.  Here are the number of PDF sales I had for each zine in their first month.

PDF Sales 1st Month
Issue #1: 40
Issue #2: 14
Issue #3:  9

I'm not sure why this is.  I know Issue #1 had some difficulties and took me a few attempts to get them straightened out.  What I think I'm going to do from now on with the PDFs is get them cleaned up and bookmarked by someone who knows how to do it.  I'll be reading up on it so I can eventually do it myself, but may need to enlist someone already versed in that already.  And when I get the 4th issue released I'll start doing bundle packages.  I know I always look for those when cruising around RPGNow.

Speaking of the 4th issue, its coming along nicely.  Jason Sholtis is really putting in a lot of hard work with not only art, but content.  He's already done more art for this issue than the first three combined.  And it looks like the 4th issue is going to be a tad larger than past issue, I'm guessing it'll be 28 pages instead of the usual 24 pages.

I also wanted to thank everyone who did reviews or gave me a shout out for issue #3.  That would be Tenkard's Tavern, Tabletop Diversions, Bat in the Attic, Lapsus Calumni, and I am sure I'm missing a couple.  Ivy is better at spotting them than I am.

Here are the total sales of each issue to date.
Knowledge Illuminates - 266    (released February 16th, 2011)
Manor #1 - 253    (released May 4th, 2012)
Manor #2 - 170    (released July 4th, 2012)
Manor #3 - 52      (released February 16th, 2013)
Cave of Seiljua - 231    (released September 9th, 2012)

I know I've mentioned this before, but Dak from CRAWL! and I have opened up a community on Google+ called RPG Zines.  If your interested learning about how to do a zine or have some knowledge to share please join.  There has been a lot of good discussion about the process and the culture of zines.  I'm learning a lot from the input.  So if that's the kind of thing that interests you, please join and say hello.

House Cleaning at the Manor

A slightly new look for Gothridge Manor.  I divided my blog rolls into 5 instead of just 2.  I'm following a lot of blogs so I am hoping I can keep up with them better.  I guess I have 6 blog rolls.  I put The Happy Whisk on her own blog roll and as I was instructed "Keep me on top."  And so I will.  I have to keep an eye on her anyway.  She's trouble.

On the right side I'm still shlepping my goods.  Knowledge Illuminates and The Manor #2 has found a new home over at Lulu and things are going well there.  However, Issue #1 of the Manor does not want to go.  It's file is refusing the cooperate.

I'm going to reinstate my commenter experience points table on the side.  I'm going to simplify it for myself because last time I did it I had to do math.  I don't like doing math.  So it will be a simple 1 comment for 1xp.  What does that mean?  I have plans for those who take the time to comment.

I won't be doing the State of the Manor 2012 in this post, but do plan to do one.  I've got a list of things I'd like to accomplish.  Need to focus a bit more.  I was told focus was the other F word.  It kinda feels like it.

Happy New Year folks.

Knowledge Illuminates Got a Second Review Today

Patrick over at Henchmen Abuse and ASE fame has done a review of Knowledge Illuminates.  His review is on the print version.  Patrick and I played a few sessions together in one of Trey's, Weird Adventure games and had a great time.  Thanks Pat for taking the time to do a review and have a great holiday.

Knowledge Illuminates Gets Hit with a 10' Pole

Hehe, it sure did.  Well I did a little.  Bryce Lynch over at tenfootpole.org did a review on the PDF of Knowledge Illuminates.  Which I promptly thanked him calling him Bruce instead of Bryce.  Way to go me.

I don't think he was all that thrilled about the adventure, but he was fair enough.  He pointed out what he disliked, thought sucked and what he liked.  All his criticisms were fair.  Bryce doesn't just say something sucked, he explains why it does.  Which is all you can ask.

Thanks again Bryce for taking the time to do the review.

PDF Version of Knowledge Illuminates is Available

Just a quick note.  I got the file converted into a readable PDF.  The PDF comes in at 28 pages because the maps and front and back covers are included.  If you've already have a copy of the old one I believe I sent out an email letting everyone know its been updated.

If I had a camera I would take pictures of the print version laying on my desk, but I ain't got one...right now.  I think we will be bringing home a digital camera this afternoon.

Those of you who have ordered the print version I'll be sending out new ones today.  With the last of my creepy butterflies.  I'm going to check a place or two for more.  They cannot all be gone.  Can they?

Anyway, if you would like please pick up a copy of the PDF for Knowledge Illuminates at RPGNow.

The Re-Relaunch of Knowledge Illuminates in Print

The final, final copy of Knowledge Illuminates is done.  With the art provided by Dylan Hartwell it has never looked better.  I plan on sending out new copies to those of you who have already ordered.  You can do a side-by-side comparison and see what you think.

The front and back covers.

There are some changes that have been made beyond the art.  I've gone through and did another edit.  I hope I got all the weird mistakes I made.  If not I'm sure someone will let me know.  I listen to what people tell me and if they find a goof I immediately go to my manuscript and fix it.  While I can't resend all issues sold (except for this once) I can fix it for future folks.  I also tried to clean up the layout.  There were some spacing issues and I resolved as many of them as I could, but there were a few I couldn't and just had to let be.

Another thing I changed is with the new art it pushed my text to the point I needed to add another page.  Well, in zine world your page count is counted in 4s.  The previous version had 28 pages, this one has 32 pages.  So what did I do with the other additional 3 pages?  I did a room-by-room checklist of things the players could do to gain experience points.  I do this for most of my homebrews.  That way at the end of the game when you have your players clamoring for their xp total you can add the marked off checklist.  No remembering required.

So if you wish to get a print copy, please click this link, Knowledge Illuminates.

The new PDF will take a little longer because I'm not good at transferring my Publisher file into a PDF file.  It wants to show them in booklet form instead of a single page scroll down.  I think I know how to solve it, but I won't get to it for another day or two.  I'll send out a mass email to those who have purchased a PDF copy and let you know when the updated file is ready.

To those of you who have been interested in getting a PDF copy, get it now while its still only a buck.  I looked at my RPGNow account and like 52 of you have in your cart and wishlist.  That sale price will be over by this weekend.

New Cover, New Art, New Edits

I'll be doing the layout for Knowledge Illuminates with Dylan's artwork.  I love that part.  But you know what I found when I started doing that?  It would be weird if you did.  I discovered all my edits I had done previously to the release on print had not been saved.  With all my astute observationary skills I failed to notice the difference.  I was editing it during a storm and we had brown outs (stills sounds like something a lactose kid has after eating a big bowl of cereal) and my program blipped off a couple of times.  And don't ask me about auto save.  I got no clue.  Got it set up to save every third of a milli second.

You know what?  Again, it would be weird if you did.  I think that was the night my computer speakers died.  My Boston Acoustics that I've transferred to each new computer since '95.  Anyway...

I am redoing the re-edits of the relaunch KI.  I do like this part of the process.  The edits should take a little time, but then putting the pictures with the text is very exciting.  Seeing it come together.  Again, Dylan Hartwell's art has its own distinct style that I enjoy and is gonna look fantastic in the pages of the adventure.  I've already completed the new cover and I think it looks great.

On a side note.  I think the cover stock dudes are being a little smarmy.  The card stock is like |--| that much shorter.  They're shaving the card stock like thieves shave coins.  Bastards.

Anyway, edits and layout for KI should be finished this morning.  Then this afternoon I'm hitting the bookstore and getting some serious work on the next Manor.

New copies should be shooting out on Monday.  I want to get them in the mail before Tuesday cause there is no mail.  Thanks to everyone who has bought a copy.  You'll be getting a new one and those who have been patient (Carter!) for the revised version.

I'm a Big Fricking Dork

Hey, I'm a big fricking dork.  Dylan from Digital Orc and I had a conversation a few weeks ago about him doing the art work for the Knowledge Illuminates Redux.  He jumped on board and was glad to help out.  I forgot.  The one night I was working on doing the layout I had already did the framework for and used some artwork I'd purchased on RPGNow.  So I released it forgetting Dylan was doing the art.  So I am stopping the presses!

Here's what's going to happen.  Dylan is finishing some of the pieces I am putting a halt on pushing out more copies.  You can still purchase them they'll just get shipped out once Dylan and I get all the stuff done.  To those of you who have already purchased a copy I'll be sending out the new version gratis.  Or as they said in a Deadwood episode, "Free fucking gratis".

Why?  We've already established I'm a big fricking dork.  Two, the art is very cool and I want those who shelled out the dough to get the best version.  Three, cause it was what I intended to do in the first place but I forgot.  Which brings us back around to the first reason again.

Here is a sample of what Dylan and his beers have been working on.  I love the pics.

Now you see why I want to wait!

However, Knowledge Illuminates will still be on sale and I'll ship out orders from this time forward when we get it all together again.  Thanks to everyone who has already ordered (as I said abive you'll get another copy) and to those who plan on ordering in the future.

Knowledge Illuminates in Print

A shot of the cover.

Back cover.

I thought it would be cool to have a print addition of Knowledge Illuminates and finally got around doing it.  It is set up like my zine.  Page fold in the center.  Booklet is stapled, the cover is not because it has the maps on the back for easy reference.  The booklet is 20 pages long.  I think it looks cool, but I am bias.  If your interested I'm charging the same as I would the zine.  You can buy a copy over at GM Games.

PS  Boric you are not allowed to buy one.  One is already on the way.

GM Games Numbers

Last night I was f'n around.  Avoiding work at home because my brain was completely f'n fried from work.  My tolerance must be getting lower as I age.  I never remember being this tired when I was younger.  Work was over and I wanted to go do something.  These days I get home and fall into a f'n catatonic state.

Its been a while since I did a update for sales at GM Games.  Its the total sales I have so far.  I swear if I make hundred bucks I spend hundred and a half in gaming books.  Looks like some of those Kickstaters are rolling in.  Looking forward to getting those.

Back to the numbers.  As of today I have sold (these numbers do not include comp copies), print & PDF, this many units of the following.

Knowledge Illuminates - 151
The Manor #1 - 129
The Manor #2 - 77

Cave of Seilju - 143

Land of Ara did a very generous blog about Knowledge Illuminates recently and I got a little spike of sales that put it over the 150 mark.  Thanks Carter.  I've been thinking of doing a redux version, with art drawn specifically for it.  And then go through the text again and clean it up.  If there are any artists out there willing to help me out with this little project shoot me a private email.  It'll put a little more scratch in your pocket.

The zine has done well.  Response has been very good.  Only my lack of production has slowed down the momentum.  I'm plodding away one the next two issues.  I've changed the point of view of my approach and now things are going more smoothly.  So I hope to have something to share soon.

Cave of Seilju was a fun one-page dungeon I did for William Dowie's one-page viking adventure contest.  Look at this freaking awesome envelope I got with my fridge magnet that I did not stick on my computer because someone made me paranoid I would erase my entire harddrive.

I removed William's address to protect him from the stalkers I know he would soon get because of the awesomeness of this envelope art.
The fridge magnet.  I put it on my magnetic white board.

Bat in the Attic is Buying

As I mention before I finished the edits on Rob's latest adventure.  Well over on his blog today he annoucned as a thank you to me, he would buy anyone who asked a copy of The Manor or Knowledge Illuminates.  So if you've had The Manor or KI sitting in your shopping cart head on over to Bat in the Attic and hit Rob up.  So far no one has taken him up on this offer.  Come on!  Get off your electronic butts and get something free.  Where have all the mooches gone?  I know Boric G could use a 3rd or 4th copy.

It's a pretty cool offer from Rob.  One I didn't expect.  Thanks Rob.  Now get to those edits.

Issue 1 of The Manor is Available on PDF

I was able to get it uploaded without too many problems this morning.  One question that popped up is when the PDF is DLed why is it regular sized instead of booklet.  I use a booklet printing feature on my printer.  You can find the PDF version of The Manor here.

For the PDF I broke it down into two files.  One for the guts and one file for the cover.  I found this worked best because when I tried to combine the two files too many weird things happened.

MAILING SCHEDULE
For those who ordered a print copy, those will be going out tomorrow.

KNOWLEDGE ILLUMINATES UPDATE
While I was on RPGNow playing around with my account I saw Knowledge Illuminates reached Silver Medal status.

WEEKEND UPDATE
I am so glad I have the next two days off!

Bad Review

It was bound to happen and it did.  Knowledge Illuminates got a bad review, but its not a bad thing at all.  I've been involved with writing on and off since the mid 80's and had my share of both good and bad reviews and some I wasn't sure which they were.  Brendan Falconer over at the Knights of the Black Banner blog (love the name of his blog) did a review of Knowledge Illuminates.  He gave is a D, but please take a moment to go read if you're interested.

Like I said in the comments I'm sort of surprised it took so long for someone to do a negative review on Knowledge Illuminates.  We gamers are not short on opinions.  But sometimes we do try to encourage one another without pointing out the faults.  I know I am guilty of this.  I'm used to taking criticism from all my other writing experiences and I don't take it personally.  Most people liked my adventure and I'm sure there are more than a few like Brendan did not like it.

A bad reviewer is one that bases his opinion on hearsay, doesn't do his homework or makes comments that aren't related to the product he is reviewing.  When I see one of those I just ignore it because its not based on anything.  It's just an idiot ranting.

Brendan's review was based on the material he's purchased and read.  His faults were based on what was in and not in the adventure.  And for that I respect his honesty and appreciate him taking the time to review.  And I see his points.  I may not agree with all of them, but most of them I do.

I think negative reviews of a product should be a good thing as long as its done well, doesn't get personal and its based on the actually product.  I think we all do this when we searching out a new product on Amazon, I know I've done it recently when I was buying a new printer.  I read all the one star reviews before I read any of the others.  Some of the comments were just dumb of course, but the one star reviewers who took the time to explain why they didn't like it was more enlightening than all the five star rah rahs.  Of course you want to see a bunch of 5 star reviews for anything you buy, but I almost guarantee you learn more from the one star.

I want to thank Brendan again for taking the time to review Knowledge Illuminates and like I told him I hope he likes my next offering better, if I can ever get it out.  His review is on my Knowledge Illuminates page with all the rest.  I think its just as important, if not more important than the others.

POW! BAM! ZONK! 100! Done!

I just wanted to thank everyone for the support and shout outs and comments.  At the end of the day I lept over the 100 mark and landed on 110.  It may not break any records or seem like a large number, but I think its great.  I never thought I would sell a 100.

I've been a big fan of the OSR.  And tried to to support it as much as I can promoting and purchasing what others have to offer.  My favorites tend to be the one man or two man products who really want to put a personal spin on gaming.  A peek at what it might be like to play in their game.  With Knowledge Illuminates I tried to give people a small dose of what it would be like to have me GMing a game.  And when you hear about others using it in their game its a great feeling.

Those who purchased a copy yesterday let me know so I can get you the proper xp.

Again, thanks to everyone who purchased a copy in the past year.  I hope to have a second offering soon.

One More Sale

I have 99 sales of Knowledge Illuminates.  I released it on the 16th of February last year.  Its anniversary is coming up quick.  I'm hoping to reach 100 sales before that date.  So if you had any wee bit of an inkling to buy a copy, do it now.  Help me hit triple digits.  Rob, from Bat in Attic, said I would sell a 100 and he likes to be right.  All I need is one person to buy one copy.  Easy enough.  It's only 100 cents.  And if having the adventure weren't enough, I'll throw in 100 Gothridge Manor experience points to sweeten the pot.  How the hell can you resist that?
